Campbeltown: Scotland's Whisky Capital
Three expressions from Scotland's smallest whisky region revealed why Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world.
Campbeltown, a small town on Scotland's Kintyre peninsula, was once home to over 30 distilleries. Today, only three remain — but what they produce is extraordinary.
We began with Kilkerran 12, the core expression from the revived Glengyle distillery. Its maritime character and gentle peat set the tone for the evening. Then came Springbank 10, perhaps the most sought-after entry-level single malt in the world. Hand-crafted from floor to bottle, it delivered a complexity that belied its age.
The evening's wildcard was a Cadenhead's Campbeltown Blended Malt at cask strength — 58.8% ABV of pure maritime power. With water, it opened up to reveal layers of vanilla, brine, and gentle smoke.
The session was a love letter to Campbeltown — a region that refuses to follow trends, preferring instead to craft whisky with the same methods used for over a century.
Pairing Highlight
Springbank 10's complexity paired surprisingly well with a mild Connecticut cigar.
"Springbank is the most authentic whisky experience in Scotland. You can taste the tradition in every sip."
