The Inaugural Tasting
Our first official tasting session brought together whiskies from Scotland, Sweden, and Austria — setting the tone for the club's journey ahead.
Every journey begins with a first step, and ours began on a warm September evening in Shanghai. Eight whiskies from four countries were lined up, and the Shanghai Whiskey & Cigar Club was officially born.
We opened with The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve — light, fruity, and approachable, it served as the perfect icebreaker. The Balvenie 12 DoubleWood followed, its honeyed character earning immediate fans. Glenglassaugh Sandend and Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 12 showcased the range of Highland character, from coastal elegance to sherry-bomb intensity.
The evening's surprises came from unexpected places. Mackmyra Svensk Rök from Sweden offered a unique juniper-smoked character, while Peter Affenzeller from Austria proved that quality whisky can emerge from anywhere.
Chivas Regal Royal Salute 21 closed the evening with the elegance that 21 years of maturation demands. As glasses were raised in a final toast, we knew this was just the beginning of something special.
Pairing Highlight
Glendronach Cask Strength with dark chocolate — a sherry lover's dream.
"This is exactly what Shanghai needed — a community of people who take whisky seriously but don't take themselves too seriously."
